Dan focused on measurement and quantitative analysis within the project. Responsibilities include developing means of measuring key concepts such as teacher mind frames and student learning outcomes, sampling, and descriptive and inferential statistical analysis of project data.
Dan conducted a survey of teachers and students investigating relationships between student approaches to learning and teacher mindframes in innovative and traditional learning environments.

Dan developed an interest in education policy while editing the journal of the Australian Education Union. This led to an opportunity to study in the Master’s Programme in Education and Globalisation at the University of Oulu, Finland. His master’s research on how the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assesment (PISA) uses the data it gathers has been published in an academic journal and in February 2015 he presented his findings at a research workshop run by the University of Cambridge at the Eurasian National University in Astana, Kazakhstan.
His chief area of interest is the use – and misuse – of quantitative data in education policy formulation.
